אֵשֶׁת־חַיִל מִי יִמְצָא¹ וְרָחֹק מִפְּנִינִים מִכְרָהּ *Eshet chayil mi yimtza, ve'rachok mipninim michrah.* [A woman of valor, who can find? Her worth is far beyond pearls.] בָּטַח בָּהּ לֵב בַּעְלָהּ וְשָׁלָל לֹא יֶחְסָר¹ *Batach bah lev ba'alah, v'shalal lo yechsar.* [The heart of her husband trusts in her, and he shall lack no gain.] גְּמָלַתְהוּ טוֹב וְלֹא רָע כֹּל יְמֵי חַיֶּיהָ¹ *Gemalathu tov v'lo ra, kol yemei chayeha.* [She rewards him with good and not evil all the days of her life.] דָּרְשָׁה צֶמֶר וּפִשְׁתִּים וַתַּעַשׂ בְּחֵפֶץ כַּפֶּיהָ¹ *Darshah tzemer ufishtim, vata'as b'chefetz kapeha.* [She seeks wool and flax and works willingly with her hands.] הָיְתָה כָּאֳנִיּוֹת סוֹחֵר מִמֶּרְחָק תָּבִיא לַחְמָהּ¹ *Haytah ka'oniyot socher, mimerchak tavi lachmah.* [She is like merchant ships; she brings her food from afar.] וַתָּקָם בְּעוֹד לַיְלָה וַתִּתֵּן טֶרֶף לְבֵיתָהּ וְחֹק לְנַעֲרֹתֶיהָ¹ *Vatakom b'od laylah, vatiten teref l'veitah, v'chok l'na'aroteha.* [She rises while it is still night and provides food for her household and tasks for her attendants.] זָמְמָה שָׂדֶה וַתִּקָּחֵהוּ מִפְּרִי כַפֶּיהָ נָטְעָה כָּרֶם¹ *Zamemah sadeh vatikachehu, mipri kapeha nat'ah kerem.* [She considers a field and acquires it; from the fruit of her labor she plants a vineyard.] חָגְרָה בְעוֹז מָתְנֶיהָ וַתְּאַמֵּץ זְרוֹעוֹתֶיהָ¹ *Chagrah b'oz motneha, vate'ametz zero'oteha.* [She girds herself with strength and makes her arms strong.] טָעֲמָה כִּי־טוֹב סַחְרָהּ לֹא־יִכְבֶּה בַלַּיְלָה נֵרָהּ¹ *Ta'amah ki tov sachrah, lo yichbeh balaylah nerah.* [She sees that her endeavors are profitable; her lamp does not go out at night.] יָדֶיהָ שִׁלְּחָה בַכִּישׁוֹר וְכַפֶּיהָ תָּמְכוּ פָלֶךְ¹ *Yadeha shilchah vachishor, v'chapeha tamchu falech.* [She stretches out her hands to the distaff and her palms hold the spindle.] כַּפָּהּ פָּרְשָׂה לֶעָנִי וְיָדֶיהָ שִׁלְּחָה לָאֶבְיוֹן¹ *Kapah parseh le'ani, v'yadeha shilchah la'evyon.* [She opens her hand to the poor and extends her hands to the needy.] לֹא תִירָא לְבֵיתָהּ מִשָּׁלֶג כִּי כָל־בֵּיתָהּ לָבֻשׁ שָׁנִים¹ *Lo tira l'veitah mishaleg, ki kol beitah lavush shanim.* [She does not fear snow for her household, for all her household is clothed in fine garments.] מַרְבַדִּים עָשְׂתָה־לָּהּ שֵׁשׁ וְאַרְגָּמָן לְבוּשָׁהּ¹ *Marvadim astah lah, shesh v'argaman levushah.* [She makes coverings for herself; her clothing is fine linen and purple.] נוֹדָע בַּשְּׁעָרִים בַּעְלָהּ בְּשִׁבְתּוֹ עִם־זִקְנֵי־אָרֶץ¹ *Noda bash'arim ba'alah, b'shivto im ziknei aretz.* [Her husband is known in the gates when he sits among the elders of the land.] סָדִין עָשְׂתָה וַתִּמְכֹּר וַחֲגוֹר נָתְנָה לַכְּנַעֲנִי¹ *Sadin astah vatimkor, vachagor natnah lakna'ani.* [She makes linen garments and sells them, and supplies belts to merchants.] עֹז־וְהָדָר לְבוּשָׁהּ וַתִּשְׂחַק לְיוֹם אַחֲרוֹן¹ *Oz v'hadar levushah, vatischak l'yom acharon.* [Strength and dignity are her clothing, and she smiles at the future.] פִּיהָ פָּתְחָה בְחָכְמָה וְתוֹרַת חֶסֶד עַל־לְשׁוֹנָהּ¹ *Piha patchah v'chochmah, v'torat chesed al leshonah.* [She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue.] צוֹפִיָּה הֲלִיכוֹת בֵּיתָהּ וְלֶחֶם עַצְלוּת לֹא תֹאכֵל¹ *Tzofiyah halichot beitah, v'lechem atzlut lo tochel.* [She watches over the ways of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness.] קָמוּ בָנֶיהָ וַיְאַשְּׁרוּהָ בַּעְלָהּ וַיְהַלְלָהּ¹ *Kamu vaneha vay'ashruha, ba'alah vayhalelah.* [Her children rise and praise her; her husband also praises her.] רַבּוֹת בָּנוֹת עָשׂוּ חָיִל וְאַתְּ עָלִית עַל־כֻּלָּנָה¹ *Rabot banot asu chayil, v'at alit al kulanah.* [Many women have achieved greatness, but you surpass them all.] שֶׁקֶר הַחֵן וְהֶבֶל הַיֹּפִי אִשָּׁה יִרְאַת־ה׳ הִיא תִתְהַלָּל¹ *Sheker hachen v'hevel hayofi, ishah yirat Hashem hi tit'halal.* [Charm is deceptive and beauty is fleeting, but a woman who fears Hashem is to be praised.] תְּנוּ־לָהּ מִפְּרִי יָדֶיהָ וִיהַלְלוּהָ בַשְּׁעָרִים מַעֲשֶׂיהָ¹ *Tenu lah mipri yadeha, vihaleluha bash'arim ma'aseha.* [Give her the fruit of her hands, and let her deeds praise her in the gates.] --- ### Sources ¹ Proverbs 31:10–31 (אֵשֶׁת־חַיִל)
